Melodic Dictation

Melodic Dictation is the skill of writing the rhythm and notes of melodic line that is played aurally a certain amount of times. In music theory, this involves listening to a melodic excerpt for a specified number of times (usually 3 or 4) and then notating the notes and rhythms that were played. It usually involves anywhere from 2 to 8 measure phrases.

Listen to the five audio files here and begin to notate the melodies being played on a piece of staff paper. A link to blank staff paper can be found under User Links on the Beginning Music Theory Homepage. These exercises are for your practice only and will not be turned in. Try limiting hearing the audios to only four times. Once you have completed each exercise, check your answers to the Answer Keys Links to an external site. of each of the five Melodic Dictation Practice examples and see how you did in melodic dictation.
