Music as an Art Form

Music note wordleMusic has a great affect on just about every society and culture around the world. In this module we will discover what music is and why it is considered an art form. We will learn how music has been influenced by the other fine art disciplines such as painting, sculpture, poetry, and dance. We will also learn how the major historic periods of music are divided as well as becoming familiar with some of the major composers in each period.

  • Who were the major composers during these historic periods?

  1. Music - Music is an art form whose medium is sound and silence.
  2. Western Music - Western Music is music that was born of the European tradition.
  3. Middle Ages Music - Middle Ages Music is Western music written during the period between 400-1400.
  4. Renaissance Music - Renaissance Music is Western music written during the period between 1400- 1600.
  5. Baroque Music - Baroque Music is Western music written during the period between 1600- 1750.
  6. Classical Music - Classical Music is Western music written during the period between 1750 -1820.
  7. Romantic Music - Romantic Music is Western music written during the period between 1820 -1900.
