Using Scatterplots in Reports

In this lesson, you will explore more bivariate data and communicate mathematically by completing the Using Scatterplots in Reports task Links to an external site.

Make sure you review these terms after completing the handout and do additional research, if necessary:

  • Form—Does the graph exhibit a linear or nonlinear pattern?
  • Direction—Does the graph exhibit a positive relationship, a negative relationship, or neither?  We can also use the word "correlation" as in "positive correlation" or "negative correlation."
  • Relative strength—Are the data points tightly clustered along the line or curve (strongly associated) or are they more scattered (weakly associated)?
  • Cause-and-effect relationship (also referred to "causation") versus simply a matter of an association (correlation only and one does not cause the other).
