Interpreting the Shape of Data
The shape of a data set can tell you a lot about the distribution. Let's learn about the different possible shapes of a distribution:
When a distribution is skewed, the mean follows the skew. The median will usually be around the peak, but the mean will not be. So, if the data is skewed, the median is the best measure of center!
Shape of Data Practice
On your own paper, make a histogram for the data below and state the shape of the distribution:
- 11, 14, 13, 14, 14, 3, 5, 14, 15, 2, 14, 14, 6, 7
- 11, 14, 13, 14, 14, 22, 25, 16, 16, 14, 13, 20, 19
- 2, 4, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 6, 7, 5, 4, 4, 2
