Conditions that Require Emergency Care
When blood flow to the parts of the body is hindered, life sustaining oxygen is not delivered to vital organs and body cells. If an artery that supplies a body tissue becomes blocked the tissue dies. This can become life-threatening if the artery supplying the heart with blood becomes blocked and the heart stops beating.
A heart attack occurs when the heart functions irregularly and may even stop, referred to as cardiac arrest.
Other causes include:
- Blood loss caused by severe bleeding
- Impaired circulation that may be caused by a blood clot
It is important to provide emergency care immediately if you suspect a cardiac emergency. This may require you to perform Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation or CPR. This will be discussed in more detail in a later unit.
