American Music of the 80's and 90's Module Overview
Introduction
In this module students will learn about the influences in the United States on the music of the 1980 and 1990 eras. Students will also learn about the major performers of these eras and get to hear the most popular music in the United States at that time.

Key Terms
- Pop Music – Music of general appeal to teenagers; a bland watered-down version of rock'n'roll with more rhythm and harmony and an emphasis on romantic love.
- Rock Music – A genre of popular music that originated as "rock and roll".
- Soft Rock Music - A form of rock 'n' roll that is restrained in style and is characterized by the predominance of melody.
- Hip Hop Music - A music genre consisting of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted
- Electronic Music - A form of music consisting of sounds produced by oscillating electric currents either controlled from an instrument panel or keyboard or prerecorded on magnetic tape.
- Grunge Music - Sometimes referred to as the Seattle sound, is a sub-genre of alternative rock that emerged during the mid-1980s in the American state of Washington, particularly in the Seattle area. Grunge is generally characterized by heavily distorted electric guitars.
- Country Music - A style and genre of largely string-accompanied American popular music having roots in the folk music of the Southeast and cowboy music of the West
- Glam Metal Music - A subgenre of hard rock and heavy metal. It combines elements of these genres with punk rock and pop music, adding catchy hooks and guitar riffs
