American Music of the 40's and 50's Module Overview
Introduction
In this module students will learn about the influences in the United States on the music of the 1940 and 1950 eras. Students will also learn about the major performers of this era and get to hear the most popular music in the United States at this time.

Key Terms
- Swing Music - a style of jazz played by big bands popular in the 1940s; where the emphasis is on the off-beat.
- Pop Music - the main goal of this music is usually that of being pleasurable to listen to, rather than having much artistic depth. Pop music is generally thought of as a genre which is commercially recorded and desires to have a mass audience appeal.
- Rock and Roll - a genre of music originated in the U.S. that is a combination of African American blues, country, jazz, and gospel music.
