Atkins, The Zone, The Cabbage Soup Diet. You may have heard of these popular diets. But, these are actually considered fad diets. Fad diets (trendy diet that promises quick weight loss and focuses on certain types of food) are diets that focus on eating certain foods. They may exclude certain foods and concentrate on others. They do not spotlight the importance of eating a well-balanced diet from all of the food groups. They often promise dramatic weight loss in a short period of time. Here is a list of some popular ones below.

  • Low-carb diet
  • Low-fat diet
  • Liquid diet (using low-calorie, high-fiber shakes)
  • Grapefruit diet
  • Detox diet
  • Cabbage Soup diet
  • Macrobiotic diet
  • The juice diet

Have you ever tried one of these? The chances are you have. People often do lose weight on these diets. However, when they return to their normal eating habits, the weight comes back. That is the trouble with fad diets. Normally, people who lose weight with these types of diets end up gaining more weight than their original pre-diet weight. Also, when these diets focus on certain foods, there is a chance that the body will not receive proper nutrients. The only true way to lose weight is to reduce calories and exercise.
