Foods To Avoid
--raw fish
--raw shellfish, such as oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops
--raw meat or poultry
--raw or unpasteurized milk or cheese
--soft cheeses such as feta, brie, blue, and Mexican-style
--raw or lightly cooked eggs or egg products, such as salad dressings, cookie dough, cake batter, sauces, and drinks such as eggnog
--unpasteurized or untreated juice from fruits and veggiesOlder people must take extra care to keep their food safe to eat. Older adults are less able to fight off infections, especially those from foods. Fully cooking eggs, pork, fish, shellfish, poultry, and hot dogs can help kill any micro-organisms that might make a person sick. Before cooking, people should always handle raw food with care. Keep it apart from foods that are already cooked or won't be cooked, like salad, fruit, or bread. Wash knives, plates, or cutting boards well and keep them separate from other utensils.   Don't cut raw meat with the same knife you will use to make a salad. Rinse raw fruits and vegetables before eating. Use hot soapy water to wash your hands, tools, and work surfaces as you cook.   Also, remember to throw away food when it is past the expiration date so there is no risk of sickness.

Some older adults have issues with memory loss and may lose their sense of taste and smell. So, it is not always easy or enjoyable to cook. Some adults may not feel comfortable in the kitchen anymore. In cases like this, it might be best to purchase prepared food or have a loved one help make meals.
