(NNAE) Medications and Food Lesson

Medications and Food Lesson

Aging adults often begin to have problems with high blood pressure and cholesterol. They may take medication for these conditions and other conditions that are common later in life. However, it is important they read the label on the medication. Many types of medications cannot be taken with certain types of food. Here are a few of the common medications and the precautions that go with each.

Common Medications and Precautions

Lipitor, Crestor, Zocor:
Cholesterol lowering medications--may not be taken with fatty food.

Coumadin:
Blood thinner--may not be taken with aspirin, Vitamin E, Garlic, Fish Oils, or Gingko because o increased risk of bleeding.

Gout Medication:
Do not eat grapefruit with gout medication and some cholesterol medications.

Each medication may have different precautions, so it is best to ask the pharmacists. Often times, older adults start to lose their vision, and may not be able to read the small print on a medication bottle, so asking questions is a smart move.
