The muscles in the esophagus squeeze the food downward with a wavelike motion, a process referred to as peristalsis. Because of this muscular action, food can be swallowed in zero gravity, or even when the body is upside down.

 

The Process

It all starts in the mouth! Digestion (the process by which food and other ingested material are broken down into nutrients that can be used by the body and later, waste products) is a very important process. Proper digestion is a necessity to healthy life. Digestion is the process by which food and other ingested material are broken down into nutrients that can be used by the body and later, excreted as waste products. This process is outlined below in the digestive infographic map below (illustrated as a subway map), however to understand it better,  you will also need to interact with the presentation below.
