Special Dietary Needs Module Overview

Introduction

image of vegetablesIn this module, you will learn about the dietary needs of athletes. Athletic diets are diverse and varied. There are athletes that eat a high fat diet, and there are even vegan and vegetarian athletes. You should recognize that rigorous activity will change the dietary needs for an individual. An 18-year-old moderately activity male will eat less than an 18-year-old track and field runner or bodybuilding wrestler. Adolescent diets will also be discussed along with the diets of older adults.  Allergens, along with the diets of vegetarians and vegans will be explored in depth.

Key Terms

  1. Athlete -  a person who is proficient in sports and other forms of physical exercise.
  2. Food Allergen - a product or ingredient containing certain proteins that can potentially cause severe or fatal reactions in a food allergic person.
  3. Food Allergy -  an abnormal response to a food triggered by your body's immune system.
  4. Older Adults - an individual in the end of the human life cycle generally considered to be 55-86 years of age.
  5. Vegan -  a diet which excludes meat, eggs, dairy products, and all other animal-derived ingredients or foods processed using animal products such as refined white sugar.
  6. Vegetarian -   a diet which excludes meat.
  7. Young Children -  an individual under the age of six.
