Spiritual, Religious, Cultural and Family Factors

image of sushiYour cultural background will also have an impact on food preparation and diet choices. Research shows that beliefs, traditions, and values are some of the most important factors influencing food choices. They also affect nutritional status and mode of food preparation.

Ethical and religious practices, such as avoiding meat, may limit the range of food people eat. For example, a strict vegan will not consume any meat products which would affect their food choices.  

Different cultural and religious groups have different food traditions. Culture and the food supply influence cuisine and food customs around the world. Cultural influences include ethnic background and religious practices. Foods for holidays and celebrations reflect culture. Learning to enjoy a variety of foods from different cultures and regions can add flavor, pleasure, and nutrition to your meals and snacks. Music, art and foods are expressions of culture. Cultural influences include your local community, ethnic or religious groups, nation and region.
