Professional Resume and Cover Letter Lesson
Building a Resume
We've learned how to use web browsers and search engines to find the websites and information that we need on the World Wide Web. But how do those webpages get on the World Wide Web? In this lesson, we will briefly look at the process of web and graphic design to get an understanding of what is involved.
When applying for a job, many companies will ask for a resume to go along with your job application. A resume is a document that summarizes an individual's education, work experience, skills, and achievements. It is typically used to apply for jobs and is an important part of the job application process.
Having a resume is important for several reasons. A resume is often the first introduction a potential employer has to you. It's a way to make a strong first impression and showcase your qualifications and experience. A resume can also lead to job opportunities. A well-crafted resume can help you stand out from other candidates and increase your chances of getting called in for an interview, which in turn can lead to job opportunities. Another important reason for having a resume is that it demonstrates your skills. A resume allows you to highlight your skills and accomplishments, including your education, work experience, and any relevant certifications or training. In addition, a polished resume demonstrates professionalism and shows that you take your job search seriously. It also shows that you have attention to detail and can communicate effectively. Applicant tracking systems are another important reason for having a resume. Many employers use applicant tracking systems to screen resumes before they even reach human eyes. Having a well-formatted resume with relevant keywords can increase your chances of getting past these systems and being considered for the position. Overall, having a strong resume is an essential tool in today's job market and can greatly increase your chances of finding employment.
Parts of a Resume
A resume is often the first impression a potential employer has of an applicant, so it's important to make it clear, concise, and well-organized. There are different formats that one can choose when building a resume. However, make sure the format that you choose is fitting for the job you are applying for. Also, a debatable question that is being asked today that you may be wondering yourself is, “Is it acceptable to put a personal picture of yourself on your resume?” There is no black or white answer to this question. However, keep in mind that any information or content that you put on your resume needs to be relevant and beneficial to your application. Avoid putting anything on your resume that may distract from your overall qualifications, experiences, and skills.
It's important to tailor your resume to the specific job you're applying for and highlight the skills and experiences that are most relevant to the position. For example, if you are applying for a Digital Design position and you have little work experience, having won first place in a track meet is not important to place on your resume under the achievements section. However, showing that you were the president of your Web Design club would show that you were a leader.
In summary, a well-written resume can help you stand out to potential employers and increase your chances of being invited for an interview.
Writing a Cover Letter
A cover letter is an important document that accompanies a resume or job application. Its main purpose is to introduce yourself to the potential employer and explain why you are interested in the position and how your qualifications and experience make you a good fit for the job. A cover letter is an opportunity to demonstrate your ability to write clearly and concisely. This is important because effective communication skills are highly valued in most jobs. While a resume provides an overview of your work experience, a cover letter allows you to provide more detail about your qualifications, skills, and achievements. It also allows you to highlight your personality and explain why you are a good fit for the company culture. A cover letter shows the employer that you have taken the time to research the company and the job, and that you are genuinely interested in the position. This can set you apart from other applicants who may not have taken the time to write a cover letter. If there are any gaps or inconsistencies in your resume, a cover letter is a good place to explain them. For example, if you took time off to care for a family member, you can explain this in your cover letter. A well-written cover letter shows that you are professional and have attention to detail. It also demonstrates that you are willing to put in extra effort to make a good impression.
Parts of a Cover Letter
A cover letter typically consists of three main parts: introduction, body, and closing.
Introduction: The introduction should include a brief introduction of yourself, mentioning the job you are applying for and where you found out about the job opening. It's also a good idea to mention why you are interested in the job and the company.
Body: The body of your cover letter should include one or two paragraphs that explain your relevant qualifications and experience, and how they make you a good fit for the job. This is where you can highlight your skills, accomplishments, and any specific experience that relates to the job you're applying for. You can also mention any education or certifications that are relevant to the position.
Closing: The closing of your cover letter should express your appreciation for the employer's consideration and invite them to contact you for an interview. You can also mention that you'll follow up with them in a week or so to check on the status of your application.
It's important to keep your cover letter concise and to the point. You want to highlight your qualifications and interest in the position without rambling or repeating information from your resume. Be sure to proofread your cover letter carefully for spelling and grammar errors, and tailor it to the specific job you're applying for. Take a look at the sample cover letter and review each part.
