The Impact of the Web on Businesses

With the Web usage of most regions being at least 70% of their population, businesses can reach a broader customer base because more people have access to the Web. The Web has become a stage for businesses to advertise their services and sell their products online known as e-commerce. The Web has increased business efficiency and profitability for many businesses around the world. As a result of e-commerce, it has driven brick-and-mortar companies out of business. For example, there was a time that you had to go to a movie store to rent movies to watch at home. This was a popular and inexpensive way for individuals and families to see a movie that had already come out in the movie theatre. To watch that movie, you had to have a DVD or CD player. Once online streaming services began to pop up, people no longer had to go to an actual store to rent a movie to watch. They could go to an online streaming service from their television or computer and rent it online. This new way of renting movies put the brick-and-mortar video companies out of business along with cutting sales for DVD or CD players needed to watch the movies. Yes, the effect of the Web caused businesses to fold or lose sales; however, it has allowed for more trendy and efficient businesses to develop that cater to the growing number of people who use the World Wide Web to simplify their lives.

Future Trends

The Web has continued to evolve and influence innovations and trends. Search engines were once considered innovative trends of the Web. However, today as the Web progresses, new innovations and trends have been created. One example is the use of chatbots. A chatbot is a software application used by businesses to simulate human conversation via text or text-to-speech instead of talking to a live agent. For various businesses, their customer service department consists of online chatbots that are supposed to help you with customer needs. Another hot trend hitting the Web is virtual reality. Through the use of special eyewear, one can be a part of an interactive simulated experience such as a concert, playing a game, or sitting on a beach in Hawaii. Another innovation of the Web is DNA profiling. Today, special software and websites have been created by the government, medical professionals, and ancestry research companies to study a person’s DNA. For the government, this helps them connect people to crimes. Medical professionals use the information for medical studies and to diagnose health issues. Individuals can locate family through DNA. Can you think of other future trends of the Web?
