Mobile Technology and the Web Lesson
Origin of the Mobile Phone
Take a look at your right hand and then your left one. What do you most likely have in it? A phone. As you run daily errands, or are at work or school, what do you see most people have in their hands? A phone. The evolution of the phone has allowed us to be able to carry our phones with us. Before cell phones, households and businesses used landline phones. These were non-portable phones stationed in our homes and businesses. There were also phones stationed outside of businesses that the public could use by putting a quarter in the phone slot to make a call. These were called pay phones. Oh, the times have changed.
Let’s take a look at the evolution of mobile phones.
Evolution of Mobile Phones Timeline
Mobile Internet
Mobile phones have transcended our daily lives. The use of cellphones has grown not just for the lone reason of having a portable phone, but because of mobile internet and its ray of applications and functions.
Instead of using a mobile phone to talk to someone on another line, we use it to make money or complete business transactions, attend conferences, watch TV, and even use it to play games. We also use mobile phones as remote controls for televisions and have them serve as security cameras. Can you think of other ways that you use your mobile phone?
Mobile Technology and Its Impact
Mobile technology has made huge improvements in our lives. Because we can take our mobile devices with us anywhere, we have around-the-clock access to an abundance of information due to it all being stored on the World Wide Web. Improvements in our lives are not the only thing that mobile phones have impacted. Mobile phones have paved the way for other forms of mobile technology to be created. Today, you have smartwatches. They can tell time, you can answer the phone and talk on them, you can keep up with how many steps you walk each day, along with many other functions that are active on a cellphone. An iPad is another form of mobile technology that is largely used in classrooms today by teachers and students. You can use it to communicate in the same way you use a cellphone. Can you think of other mobile technology devices that exist today?
Although the impact has been great on our lives, some argue that mobile technology has negatively influenced our work ethic, soft skills, communication skills, and social skills. Others argue that the mobile web is time-consuming. People spend more time on their phones instead of being actively engaged or involved with their surroundings. Some believe that verbal communication is being stifled by texting. They also believe that real-world experiences like traveling and shopping are being replaced by the web. What do you believe?
Take a sheet of paper and write down what you think are the advantages and disadvantages of mobile technology. Then think about its impact today. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? If there are disadvantages, how are you impacted by them?
