Have you heard the expression “There just isn’t enough time in the day”? Many of us probably think this quite often. As a student when you consider all the school and extra-curricular activities, family events, job responsibility, etc. it is often difficult to find the time you need to do all you want to do. We would all love to have an extra couple of hours each day. Seeing as this is impossible, we need to work smarter on things that have the highest priority, and then create a schedule that reflects our work and personal priorities.

In this module, we will take a look at time management and some skills to help manage your time and at the same time help to keep stress to a minimum.

Time Management is the process of organizing and planning how to divide your time between specific activities. Good time management enables you to work smarter – not harder – so that you get more done in less time. Failing to manage your time damages your effectiveness and causes stress. The highest achievers manage their time exceptionally well. By using effective time-management techniques, you can improve your ability to function more effectively – even when time is tight and pressures are high. Good time management requires an important shift in focus from activities to results. This effort in developing time management will result in great benefits, including:

  • Greater productivity and efficiency
  • A better professional reputation
  • Less stress
  • Increased opportunities for advancement
  • Greater opportunities to achieve important life and career goals

Just as managing time can result in benefits, failure to manage your time effectively can have some very undesirable consequences:

It seems that there is never enough time in the day – but, we all get 24 hours so why is it that some people achieve more with their time than others?

The answer lies in good time management. Being busy isn’t the same as being effective. Spending your day in a frenzy of activity often achieves less, because you’re dividing your attention between so many tasks.

Good time management lets you work smarter – nor harder – so you get more done in less time. Time management is a practice of skills to help you organize and plan how long you spend on specific activities. Investing and spending a little time learning about and practicing time management techniques will have huge benefits now and throughout your career.
