Introduction

When was the last time you ordered an item online? If you are like most teens, you have used your mobile device to purchase an app or accessed an E-Commerce site like Amazon to place an order. Online shopping has become so popular that we now have a "Cyber Monday."  As a web designer, you should understand the elements necessary to add e-commerce capability to a website. This module will provide you with the opportunity to use elements and attributes to create an e-commerce website. You will learn about the process involved in online purchases, understand the role of E-Commerce in today's business environment, and create an e-commerce website.

E-Commerce is a form of digital marketing. Through your website, you will market your business and/or products to potential customers.

Brand | The identity of the business.

Business-to-Business (B2B) | Businesses that sell their products or services to other businesses.

Business-to-Consumer (B2C) | Online businesses that sell products and services to consumers.

Business-to-Employee (B2E) | Businesses focus on their employees and keeping them satisfied.

Business-to-Government (B2G) | An online marketplace in which businesses with products and services to sell are matched with government agencies that have purchasing needs.

Checkout process  | The process to add and or remove items prior to finalizing a purchase.

Consumer-to-Business (C2B) | Consumers sell products to businesses.

Consumer-to-Consumer (C2C)  | Consumers sell items or services directly to other consumers.

Digital Currency | Any currency, money, or money-like asset that is primarily managed, stored, or exchanged on digital computer systems, especially over the Internet.

Dropshipping | Order fulfillment that goes directly from the manufacturer to the consumer without the retailer ever taking possession of the item. 

E-business | Doing business online.

E-commerce | The business of buying and selling products online.

E-Commerce Application | The software that handles e-commerce transactions.

Extranets | Private intranets that allow some external access.

Government-to-business | Government agencies that transact with businesses to provide services.

Government-to-consumer | Government agencies that transact with consumers to provide services.

Hacking | The gaining of unauthorized access to data in a system or computer.

HTTPS Protocol | Hypertext Transfer Protocol Secure – uses encryption for secure communication over a computer network.

Intranets | Private internal network used by employees to collaborate and communicate.

Logistics | The process of getting goods and services to the customer.

One-time credit card | A method of making purchases while keeping the actual credit card number hidden.

Order Fulfillment | The process of receiving, packing, and shipping orders.

Payment gateway  | The network used that connects online stores with credit card companies.

Payment processor | A business that verifies, authorizes, and processes secure credit card transactions in real time over a network.

Personalization | The ability of websites to adjust to the individual user and information is tailored to that user's needs.

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) | Standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client.

SEO | Search Engine Optimization – a strategy used to direct online traffic to a website.

Subscription Service | Consumers sign up for recurring services or shipments, which gives the business a regular income.

Sustainability | A societal goal that relates to the ability of people to safely co-exist on Earth over a long time. 

Third-party payment processor | Allows your customers to shop at an online store and then pay for their purchases at the third-party payment processor's site.

Virtual Reality | A simulated experience that allows the user to feel immersed in a virtual world.

Virtual shopping cart | Software that records each individual item purchased and then summarizes the purchased items into a single order.

Voice Commerce | Allowing customers to order items with their voice using digital assistants.
