Data Visualization

Quote "A picture is worth a thousand words!"What exactly does that idiom mean? It is often easier to show something visually than to describe it with words. With that in mind, think about how you can visually represent information.

Data visualization is the study that examines information through visual representations, such as graphs, charts, or tables. Any graphic representation of data falls within the scope of data visualization. It helps communicate data in a way that’s easy for the viewer to interpret and draw conclusions. You can leverage many different techniques and tools to visualize data, so you want to know which ones to use and when.

Data is everywhere and it’s becoming increasingly important to understand how to navigate the digital world of information. Almost all of your world is driven by data. Data visualization plays an even greater role in the business world, from smartwatches to the Internet of Things (IoT). It can be applied to pretty much any career or field. It makes sense that, if we can effectively display data visually, we can make it accessible and understandable to more people.

Graphs and charts are great because they communicate information visually. For this reason, graphs are often used in newspapers, magazines, and businesses around the world. Sometimes, complicated information is difficult to understand and needs an illustration. Graphs or charts can help impress people by getting your point across quickly and visually. In fact, data scientists can use the tools to ultimately be able to analyze information, draw conclusions and communicate to their audience.

Data Visualization Learning Object

Take a look at the Data Visualization learning object below to get a brief description of examples of some ways data is represented visually.

The examples shown are just a couple of examples to gauge your understanding of the importance of data visualization.

Lastly, think about how complex data can be made understandable and relevant through this form of visual communication with the help of software tools. Take a look at how you can use a digital tool, such as Google Sheets to interpret and evaluate information to create that visual.
