Career Pathways Module Overview

Introduction

Students need career pathways for a number of reasons. Initially, career pathways should help students understand and consider different career choices by discovering workplaces and seeing how the workplace relates to the curriculum. A career pathway will also help students make decisions on how much and what kind of education to pursue after high school. In a career pathway, students will create a portfolio to highlight their achievements and demonstrate their knowledge of the expectations of them in the world of work. Ultimately, the career pathway will foster students who are both focused and flexible.

1. Career - an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person's life and with opportunities for progress
2. Career pathway - a coherent, articulated sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical courses, commencing in the ninth grade and leading to an associate degree, baccalaureate degree and beyond, an industry recognized certificate, and/or licensure
3. Collaborative - produced or conducted by two or more parties working together
4. Articulated course - an articulated course is one in which the student is admitted to the higher level course on the understanding that the student may exist with a lower level award
5. Values - your values are the things that you believe are important in the way you live and work

Module Minute

According to the National Career Pathways Network, a career pathway is "a coherent, articulated sequence of rigorous academic and career/technical courses, commencing in the ninth grade and leading to an associate degree, baccalaureate degree and beyond, an industry recognized certificate, and/or licensure."  This sequence is mapped by a partnership between secondary and post-secondary education and business which assures that students are acquiring industry recognized skills.  The idea behind career pathways is to help focus students on career preparation beyond high school.  This is done by offering students the opportunity for dual enrollment or articulation which allows them to complete college level classes while still in high school.  While the focus of career pathways is work readiness, the career pathway initiative is not meant to limit the interest or abilities of a student, but rather strengthen their credentials for entering the world of work.
