Fire Prevention Lesson
Most fatal home fires happen at night when people are sleeping, and so with a smoke detector you can really save lives. You already know how important smoke detectors are in the home and how a smoke detector beeping will let you know that there is a fire and you are in danger and that you need to get out.
The placement of your smoke detectors is also very important. Because the purpose of these alarms is to wake sleeping persons and let them know that they are in danger, make sure that you have at least one smoke alarm outside of every bedroom.
The image below shows proper placement of smoke alarms in a house.
Prevent Home Fires
Most home fires occur in the kitchen while cooking and are the leading cause of injuries from the fire. Common causes of fires at night are carelessly discarded cigarettes, sparks from fireplaces without spark screens or glass doors, and heating appliances left too close to furniture or other combustibles. These fires can be particularly dangerous because they may smolder for a long period before being discovered by sleeping residents.
More Prevention Tips
- Avoid using lighted candles.
- Never use the range or oven to heat your home.
- Replace mattresses made before the 2007 Federal Mattress Flammability Standard. Mattresses made since then are required by law to be safer.
- Keep combustible and flammable liquids away from heat sources.
- Portable generators should NEVER be used indoors and should only be refueled outdoors or in well-ventilated areas.
