Cultural Diversity Module Wrap Up

Review

Jimmy Carter Quote Image

"We are of course a nation of differences. Those differences don't make us weak. They're the source of our strength."
--Jimmy CarterWe started off by learning more about your cultural heritage. It is important to remember we are all immigrants in America. From the immigrant clearing customs today to the people groups moving across ice bridges thousands of years ago - America is made up of people from somewhere else. That constant merging of new cultures into our mainstream is what has fueled our ability to innovate and lead.

We then learned how much we are still changing. For LPSCS professionals this is a challenge as we attempt to stay aware of cultural differences. Treating others with respect and dignity is the key to our success.

We then reviewed the Roadblocks to Understanding that inhibits our ability to interact with other cultures. With understanding and using the Overcoming Isms, we learned how to get past the obstacles and progress toward cultural awareness. We learned that living in a pluralistic society does not require us to compromise our own faith, beliefs or identity.

Finally, we learned that within American culture there are internal splits from the mainstream into subcultures. Some subcultures are mostly image based while others are genuinely about alternative perspectives. Some have had a significant impact on mainstream culture in the long run. Some subcultures are dangerous, such as the sovereign citizen and the white supremacy groups. Finally, some subcultures are beginning to find a place in mainstream after years of struggle. GLBTs are beginning to find common acceptance.
