American Subcultures Lesson

Another type of culture that LPSCS professionals deal with is subcultures. Subcultures are cultural groups that break with traditional mainstream culture. They can be identified by a style of dress, lifestyle, music, rejection of societal norms or political beliefs. Whereas immigrant cultures come from another part of the world, subcultures are breaks within American culture. They are often in reaction to a rejection of societal norms and often foster a new direction in mainstream culture. Hippies, gangsta, emo, GLBT and skaters are examples of these groups.

In the last century there have been several emerging subcultures that will help you understand the nature of subcultures. Review information presented below:

Anti-Government Subcultures

A potentially deadly group of anti-government subcultures is exemplified by the sovereign citizen movement. This group rejects most or all of federal law. They seek ways to bypass taxes. They also may refuse to do anything that registers them with the government, such as social security, drivers' licenses and gun registration. Their beliefs often get them in trouble with authorities. They have been known to kill police and other government officers. Several white supremacist groups are similarly an issue.
