(CD) Cultural Awareness Lesson

Cultural Awareness Lesson

Diversity is a historic concept. Consider the following:

2300 Years Ago
" I am not an Athenian, nor a Greek, but a citizen of the world."
--Socrates

" Peace and friendship with all mankind is our wisest policy. And I wish we may be permitted to pursue it."
--Thomas Jefferson

" We must learn to live together as brothers, or we are going to parish together as fools."
--Martin Luther King, Jr.

America is Changing

Image of 2 hands...one African American the other CaucasionAmerica is changing. Did you know that by 2025 it is estimated that whites will no longer be in the majority? The percentage of Americans who are white will slip below 50% for the first time in history. Blacks are also seeing their percentage slip downward, too.

The fasting growing segment of our population is Hispanic (to include Latinos for this discussion). Asian, Caribbean and Middle Eastern immigrants are also increasing.

We once looked at diversity as white and black people. Today diversity includes nationalities, religion and even disabilities. Increasingly we are branching subcultures such as Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) which will be discussed later.

The reason we learn about all this is because ignorance of other groups can lead to misunderstandings and even hatred. Some worry that we are all expected to adapt to these other beliefs. This is simply not true. The real objective here is to respect others.

Others can live their lives however they choose in America. As professionals in LPSCS we will encounter all types of people. It is important that we understand them. Understanding brings respect. But respect does not mean compromising our belief system. Respecting that someone is Hindu does not change your faith. Respecting GLBTs does not mean everyone agrees with their lifestyle. Respect means we treat all humans with dignity.
