Workplace Safety Lesson 

Getting started in the world of work is exciting! You may hope to make money to help your family, buy a car or begin to save for some larger expense like college. But did you know that 331 youth died working in 2011! It is very important that you learn about how to work with safety in mind.

Next you need to become familiar with the laws that regulate youth employment. These rules are strictly enforced. A company can be fined up to $50,000 per infraction! These rules apply to anyone under 18 years of age.

 

 

So what are the most common causes of injuries? The first is overexertion which is caused by lifting, pushing or carrying something that is heavy. Falling and slipping are the next two. Being struck by an object is the next most common injury. Rounding out the top causes of injuries is vehicle accidents.

To avoid injuries at work you can do some simple things. Make sure you always lift with your legs and not your back. Use a team member to move heavy items. Be sure of your footing when on ladders or walking on slippery surfaces. Always make sure you are trained on any equipment you use, especially if it has moving parts or sharp edges.

 

Dude...Wash Your Hands!

While working you will be exposed to infectious agents. This could be from handling food, interacting with customers or other interactions. One of the most infectious things we all touch is money! Proper hand washing procedures and washing your hands five times a day will improve your health and reduce your exposure. In one study, Marines who washed their hands five times a day were half as likely to get the flu.
