Digital Footprint
Well, what is your digital footprint? Anytime you comment on something on social media or use an app, you are leaving a trail of your history online. When you send an email, send a message, or browse the internet, that’s your digital footprint, too.
Do you know who can see your digital footprint? Practically anyone! Your family, friends, teachers, college admissions officers, and potential future employers. Remember that your digital footprint can be tracked in an online database, and it can follow you for the rest of your life.
How can you try to keep your digital footprint clean? Well, when you make a new social media account, make sure that your privacy setting is set to private. You also want to make sure that you never ever share your password. When other people know your password, they can post or comment on things without your knowledge. Make sure that you never accept friend requests or requests to follow people that you do not actually know. And finally, do not click on any suspicious links within emails or online, and do not reply to any spam or junk emails.
You have heard from Princess about how to have etiquette, but now listen to some of your human friends about digital footprints.
Tips to Take Home:
- Never post things online that could get you in trouble today or even in the future.
- Always be honest about your age when a site asks for it during registration.
- Only tag friends in posts responsibly.
- Any of the content that you put online can stay there forever online, even if you try to delete it.
- There is not really such a thing as being anonymous. Even posts that you try to make anonymous can still be tracked and traced.
