Day 13 British Colonial: Introducing the Phenomenon
Introducing the Phenomenon
Greetings!
We just finished the unit on the European explorers. But what happened after they became the first Europeans to see various parts of the New World?
Well–colonies were established! Europeans were hearing about what was in the New World, and they thought they could start a new life across the Atlantic. Getting there would not be an easy task. Remember talking about long journeys on ships with little water and lots of hardtack? Despite all this, many thought the effort would be worth it.
Visual
Take a look at the digital poster below. It compares a map of the colonies as they looked in 1775 to what our map of the east coast of the United States looks like today.
- What do you notice?
- What do you wonder about the markings on the map?
Assignment
Answer the following questions on today’s discussion board.
What do you notice about the names of the colonies (map on the left) versus the names of the states (map on the right)?
There were 13 colonies. Do you think they were all the same as each other?
These colonies were separated into 3 main regions. What do you think would be an effective way to split colonies into regions?

Bonus Interactive
Use the geoboard below to use “rubber bands” to create shapes. Using as many rubber bands as you want with at least two colors, make a design for what you wish your ship looked like for crossing the Atlantic Ocean. Don’t forget the sails! The ships back then had no electricity. Have fun designing your own ship.
