Introduction

When prepositions are in sentences, they are used in prepositional phrases. These phrases show us the object and preposition relationship.

A preposition always needs an object.
The object of the preposition is a noun (or word/phrase acting as a noun) that follows a preposition and completes its meaning.
Aika drove her truck to the beach.
To is the preposition. beach is the object. The phrase is to the beach.
A prepositional phrase has three parts.
It has the preposition, the object of the preposition, and the modifiers of the object.
The clownfish swam away from the gigantic shark.
away from is the preposition. gigantic is a modifier. shark is the object. The phrase is away from the gigantic shark.
