Day 1 Explorers Introduction
Explorers Introduction
Greetings!
Being a kid, there’s a good chance you have explored a place you haven’t seen before. Maybe it was your backyard when you moved into a new house. Maybe it was along a river on a camping trip. Maybe it was just driving a new way to your grandparents’ house and seeing a town you’ve never seen before. But have you ever wondered what it would be like to explore a place that no one from your city has ever seen?
That is exactly what the famous explorers from Europe did when they began their expeditions to the New World. They knew they were going to see parts of the Earth that no one from their European towns had seen before. And there were a lot of things they didn’t know they would see or do when they got there.
We are about to learn about 6 major European explorers that sailed to the New World.

- What do you notice?
- What do you wonder about the markings on the map?
Activity
Answer the following questions on today’s discussion board.
1️⃣The people on the map mark some places the explorers were living at the time they wanted to travel to the New World. Look at the arrow that goes to the teal circle. That is where they wanted to go. What do you notice about the space in between they were and where they wanted to go?
2️⃣Now look where the red circles are. This is where the explorers actually went. What do you notice about the space in between where the explorers were living and where they actually traveled to?
3️⃣Explorers and their crews traveled by ship to the New World. There was no electricity, no engine to power the ships, and clean water was very scarce. What do you think life was like on these voyages before landing in the New World?
