Conflict and Change

Introduction

Hello 3rd Graders! Let's talk about how conflict within a society can produce change.

Our personal experiences can determine how we respond to changes. Today we will start a project that will show how conflict can lead to change.  First, review the anchor chart below and note all the different things that can lead to change.

Comic Creation on Conflict

Let's create a comic strip to show how conflict can lead to change.  We will work on this over the next few days.

Step 1: Read the situations below.  Choose one for the focus of your comic strip.

Jenna had a friend over to her house for a playdate. While enjoying each other’s company and playing with Jenna’s toys, they also made quite a mess. Jenna asks her friend to help her clean up. Jenna’s friend replies with “Those aren’t my toys and it’s not my house. Why should I clean up?”

What should Jenna say?

At the park, the children are all climbing across the monkey bars. After many attempts, you have not yet mastered being able to go all the way across. The other children start teasing you for not being able to do it.

How should you respond to these other children?

Your big brother asks you to watch a scary movie with him. You love your brother and want to spend time with him, but the truth is that you are actually very afraid.

How can you explain this to him without losing a chance to share some time with him?

Alexis goes to the community park and is excited to see a group of friends there. As she walks up, they walk off and ignore her. She becomes upset because her friends aren’t talking to her and she doesn’t know why.

What should Alexis do?

Step 2: Now that you have chosen one of the situations above, start thinking about your answer to the question at the bottom.  This will be your conclusion.  Begin drafting the conclusion in your social studies notebook or on a piece of paper.

You will continue to use this writing to begin creating your illustrations, showing how this conflict between the characters can lead to a change.
