Thematic Unit: Influences - Pygmalion: Act III Lesson
Several months later, Higgins invites himself, Pickering, and Eliza over to his mother's tea to test out Eliza's new skills. As the few guests arrive, it's easy to tell Eliza's speech has improved tremendously. However, throughout the discussion, she does manage to make a few slip-ups, mainly minor vulgarities, or delving into her past life. Higgins plays this off as the newest slang way to speak. After the guests leave, while Eliza is preoccupied, Mrs. Higgins chastises Henry for swearing too much around his live-in pupil. It is clearly rubbing off on her speech, and she can never really be a member of high society if she is too vulgar. Higgins gets vehemently angry, defending Eliza's quick learning ability, although describing her more like a machine than a person.
