Thematic Unit: Memories - Non-Fiction Module Overview

Introduction

Open Book ImageHave you ever read an editorial in a newspaper? Have you ever watched a documentary? Have you ever seen a special news report? These can all be considered nonfiction works, but we must use detective skills to determine if facts or opinions are being used. In this unit, students will read nonfiction, as well as learn to determine fact from opinion.

  1. What are facts?
  2. What are opinions?
  3. Can facts and opinions appear in nonfiction?

  • Facts: Statement that can be proven true or false.
  • Opinion: Statement that cannot be proven true or false
