Introduction

Writing comes in many forms. Students have practiced writing informational and expository papers in previous units. Now, we will move on to persuasive and narrative writing. These two styles of writing are very different. Persuasive writing involves convincing a reader to believe what the writer is saying. Narrative writing tells a story that the writer wants to share. Let's learn how to be better persuasive and narrative writers.

Key Terms

  • Persuasive writing: a piece of writing in which the writer uses words to convince the reader of his/her view regarding an issue.
  • Narrative writing: any account that presents connected events (examples include biographies, short stories, novels).
  • Paragraph: a group of sentences that explain a single idea. Should start with a topic sentence and include clear examples, details, and/or explanations.
  • Thesis statement: a sentence at the end of the intro paragraph that clearly states the main focus of the essay. 
  • Introduction: the opening paragraph of an essay
  • Conclusion: the closing paragraph of an essay
  • MLA Format: the style adopted by the Modern Language Association used to format papers
