Thematic Unit: Choices - Nonfiction Module Overview

Wordle ImageWhen thinking of nonfiction, many students think of boring encyclopedia articles and uninteresting stories. However, nonfiction can be very interesting. Unlike fiction, nonfiction is made up of the true stories told or reported by writers. The amazing story of Anne Frank is only one example. When we read nonfiction, we learn about people and events that are not only interesting, but may have helped to shape history. History is filled with choices. In this unit, we will take a look at a speech and a diary that were the result of some big choices.

Key Terms

  • Autobiography: is a form of nonfiction in which a writer tells his or her own life story
  • Biography: a form of nonfiction in which a writer tells the life story of another person
  • Description: a portrait in words of a person, place, or object
  • Essay: a short nonfiction work about a particular subject
  • Descriptive Essay: seeks to convey an impression about a person, place, or object
  • Narrative Essay: tells a true story
  • Expository Essay: gives information, discusses ideas, or explains a process
  • Persuasive Essay: tries to convince reader to do something or to accept the writer's point of view
  • Diary: personal account of one's daily life with entries separated by date and/or time
  • Memoir: type of narrative nonfiction that presents the story of a period in a person's life and is usually written from the first person point of view
  • Speech: oral presentation of an idea, concept, position; can entertain, inform, persuade the intended audience
  • Nonfiction: prose writing that presents and explains ideas or tells about real people, places, ideas, or events
  • Subjective writing: writing based on author's opinions
  • Objective writing: writing based on facts only
