Thematic Unit: Guilt - Lessons in Poetry Module Overview
Introduction
Poetry is often regarded as a challenging subject. However, poetry does not have to be intimidating. In this unit, students will begin working with poetry and analyzing its structure. Tone and figurative language will be an important part of this study! By the end of this unit, students will have a stronger understanding of poetry and its meaning.

Key Terms
- Ballad: a simple narrative poem in short stanzas
- Couplet: a stanza of two lines
- Free Verse: poem that does not follow poetic conventions or rhyme, metre, etc
- Haiku: a Japanese poem with three lines (5 syllables, 7 syllables, 5 syllables)
- Metre: pattern of groups of syllables in a poem
- Quatrain: a stanza o four lines
- Rhyme: similar word sounds at the end of lines
- Rhyme scheme: pattern of rhymed lines, which are described with letters (abba, abab, etc.)
- Rhythm: a regular pattern of sounds
- Sonnet: a short poem of 14 lines, each containing 10 or 11 syllables
- Stanza: a unit, or verse, in a poem
- Verse: a unit, or stanza, of a poem
