Novels can take on many genres including fantasy, horror, science-fiction, historical fiction, romance, mystery, thriller, and more.  What kind of novels do you enjoy reading? Look at the list below and take some time to choose the novel you will read for this course.

Key Terms

  • Exposition: details important to the foundation of the story
  • Rising action: the actions that move the plot, leading to the climax of the story
  • Climax: the most exciting part of the story
  • Falling action:  comes after the climax and leads to the end of the story
  • Resolution: where loose ends are tied up
  • Setting: the time, place, and other details about when the story takes place
  • Theme: the central or main idea in a work of fiction
  • Conflict: a struggle between two opposing forces
  • Suspense: when the audience wonders what will happen next
  • Characterization: personality a character displays
