Lesson Topic 2: Plot Structure

The plot of any novel is made up of a number of episodes or separate incidents. These incidents are connected in some way so that the plot flows on without breaks.

Exposition: This is an introduction of the story; this is where you get to know the characters and the settings.
Rising Action: The events and complications that lead to an important and dramatic point in the plot.
Climax: This is the point of greatest interest and emotional involvement in the plot.
Falling Action: The events that develop from the climax and lead to the conclusion of the story.
Resolution: This is the final outcome that ties up any loose ends left in the story.

Questions to Encourage Reflection About Plot:

What went on in this story?
What parts of the plot did you find to be the most significant? Why?
What were the turning points in this plot for you? Why?
What idea or image or situation meant the most to you as you read this text? Why?
What did the author of this text do that helped you enjoy the story? That made you not enjoy the story?
If this story were to continue, what do you think would happen next? Why?
If you could change the ending, would you? How would you change it?
