Lesson Topic 3: On Being Seventeen, Bright, and Unable to Read

David Raymond was born in Norwalk, Connecticut, and he attended Curry College in Massachusetts in a special program for students with learning disabilities. Listening to lectures and books on tape enabled him to complete his assignments. In this autobiographical account, the author tells what it is like to have dyslexia. An autobiography is an account of the life of a person, written by that person.

As you read the text, consider the pain and embarrassment of dealing as a teenager with a learning disability that left the author unable to read for many years. How does this story encompass the theme of individuality vs. conformity? What was the tone of the text? What was the author's purpose in writing about this experience?
