Lesson Topic 3: Chapters 4-6

A picture of a blue book. Hopefully you are enjoying The Outsiders so far! In the first few chapters, you should have learned about the difference between a Greaser and a Social (Soc). In addition, you are introduced to the characters and the varying differences between the social classes in the book. Hinton makes a point to show the characteristics of each group while displaying that there isn't that much difference between the rival groups. The outside appearances of the characters may be different, but at the end of the day, all of the characters have the same general wants and desires. "Just don't forget that some of us watch the sunset too."

It is now time to read chapters 4-6. Look for examples of foreshadowing as you read. Are there clues that tell you what is about to happen next? Do you think that the point of view in the novel helps or hurts the story? Do you like Ponyboy as the narrator?
