The setting of The Outsiders is essential to the overall plot and theme. The book takes place during the 1960s. 

Let's Meet the Characters!

Ponyboy Curtis: the 14-year-old narrator and protagonist
in the novel; he is the youngest of the greasers
Steve Randle: Sodapop's best friend; greaser who knows everything about cars
Cherry Valence: Soc cheerleader who is the girlfriend of Bob
Darrel Curtis: Ponyboy's oldest brother; known as "Darry" - he is raising Ponyboy because their parents have died in a car crash
Sandy: Sodapop's girlfriend
Bob Sheldon: Cherry's boyfriend; Soc who beats up Ponyboy before the novel begins
Sodapop Curtis: Ponyboy's happy, handsome brother; middle brother
Randy Adderson: handsome Soc; Bob's best friend
Johnny Cade: a 16-year-old greaser who is the child of abusive, alcoholic parents
Dallas Winston: toughest hood in Ponyboy's group of greasers; he used to run with gangs
Paul Sheldon: husky, blonde Soc who was friends with Darry in high school
Two-Bit Mathews: joker of Ponyboy's group; wisecracking greaser who shoplifts

Now, it is time to read the first three chapters of The Outsiders. As you read, pay close attention to the setting and mood. What emotions or feelings do you have after reading the first part of the book? How does the setting contribute to the plot?
