Lesson Topic 2: Plot Structure
The plot of any novel is made up of a number of episodes or separate incidents. These incidents are connected in some way so that the plot flows on without breaks.
- Exposition: This is an introduction of the story; this is where you get to know the characters and the settings.
- Rising Action: The events and complications that lead to an important and dramatic point in the plot.
- Climax: This is the point of greatest interest and emotional involvement in the plot.
- Falling Action: The events that develop from the climax and lead to the conclusion of the story.
- Resolution: This is the final outcome that ties up any loose ends left in the story.
This Plot Pyramid diagram shows how the main events in a story are organized into a plot.
