Lesson Topic 5: Expository Writing
Expository writing presents a reader with information. It can cover any information from how to change a tire, to how to bake a cake, to how to conduct research, plus many more topics. It does not present opinions, only informs. You might see expository writing in cookbooks, instruction manuals, textbooks, and even some novels.
Expository writing is about presenting information and facts, not personal opinions. In expository writing, you are communicating researched facts and information. Your goal is to teach the audience something new.

Characteristics of Expository Writing
- States the main idea and explains all pieces or steps thoroughly
- Supports ideas using quotes, statistics, examples, and facts
- Information is logically organized
- Shows commitment to the topic
