Burning Bridges: What History Has Taught Us - Nonfiction
Introduction
Historical events such as the Civil Rights Movement can teach us much about our country during the 1950s and 1960s. Civil Rights activists Martin Luther King, Jr. and Malcolm X spent much of their time fighting for equal rights and racial justice among African Americans. In this module, students will study nonfiction passages written by both King and Malcolm X while paying close attention to the similarities and differences between both men.
Essential Questions
- What are the various types of nonfiction?
- What was Martin Luther King, Jr.'s philosophy of nonviolence, and can we follow his example today?
- Is the separate black nation proposed by Malcolm X a better or nobler goal than "the beloved community" of Martin Luther King, Jr.?
- What would Americans need to believe, and how would they act, to achieve Malcolm X's goal as opposed to King's?
