Burning Bridges: What History Has Taught Us - Novel
Introduction
Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, written by Mildred Taylor, was inspired by her father, who was a wonderful storyteller. Taylor's father spoke honestly about racism and morality, and he could manipulate the emotions of a listener masterfully. Taylor did not know she wanted to become a writer until she entered a writing contest. Her manuscript, a children's story called Song of the Trees, won the award and was published. Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry won the Newberry Award in 1976 and was published just a few months after her father died.
