There and Back: Science Fiction and Fantasy - Writing
Introduction
Writing is a skill that you will continue to refine over the course of your educational career. There are all different types of writing, but you will learn about two specific types of writing in this module: descriptive and argumentative. Writing takes practice, so it is necessary to write frequently in order to improve your writing skills.
Essential Questions
- What are the elements of successful argumentative writing?
- What is descriptive writing?
Descriptive writing vividly describes a person, place, or thing in such a way that the reader can visualize the topic and feel like they are part of the experience. Descriptive writing is characterized by the following:
- The elaborate use of sensory details
- Details that go beyond the general
- Details that enable the reader to picture or relive what the writer is telling
On the other hand, persuasive writing, also known as argumentative writing is a piece of writing in which the writer uses words to convince the reader of his/her view regarding an issue. Persuasive writing sometimes involves convincing the reader to perform an action, or it may simply consist of an argument(s) convincing the reader of the writer's point of view. Persuasive writing is one of the most used writing types in the world. Persuasive writers employ many techniques to improve their arguments and show support for their claims.
