Lesson Topic 3: Arthurian Legend
Fantasy is closely associated with science fiction because of the imaginary characters and settings. One of the most famous stories of fantasy involves the Arthurian Legend and King Arthur.
The legends associated with King Arthur and his legendary court of Camelot have delighted generations of readers. Modern concepts of chivalry and valor find their roots in these medieval tales of gallantry. By studying these legends, students can better understand the way real events can inspire legends and how a society's values can redefine the ways in which legends are told.
King Arthur is a legendary British leader of the late 5th and early 6th centuries, who, according to medieval histories and romances, led the defense of Britain against Saxon invaders in the early 6th century. The details of Arthur's story are mainly composed of folklore and literary invention, and his historical existence is debated and disputed by modern historians.
It is now time to read one of the many Arthurian legends called "The Sword in the Stone." Links to an external site. As you read, determine the parts of the story that seem real to you. Which parts seem to be fantasy or made up? Do you think the Arthurian Legend is real?
