The Writing Process and Parts of an Essay

writing processKnowing how to write well is one of the most important and essential skills an individual can possess. Effective communication is necessary for success, and writing is still one of the most important aspects of communication.   In this unit, students will learn about the writing process as well as the parts of an essay which include the introduction, thesis statement, body paragraphs, and conclusion. In addition, students will be introduced to peer editing and the revision process.

  1. What are the steps in the Writing Process?
  2. How does peer editing work?
  3. What can I do to write a well-written essay?

Introduction

  1. The Writing Process: Prewriting, drafting, editing, revising, publishing.
  2. Prewriting: a time that you can use to experiment, to jot down a few quick ideas, to try out something new without having to try very hard, to take a little time gathering your thoughts and choosing a direction before you start drafting.
  3. Drafting: Preparing a preliminary version of a text.
  4. Revising: Reconsidering and altering something in the light of further evidence. Reexamining and making alterations to written or printed matter.
  5. Peer Editing: Getting a response from other writers when you share your work.
  6. Editing: Taking care of any problems you have with writing conventions like spelling, punctuation, grammar, and usage.
  7. Publishing: Preparing a piece of writing so that it can be read, understood, and enjoyed by the public.
  8. Thesis: A sentence that reflects the main idea of the paper and includes the writer's opinion on the topic and is the last sentence of the introduction.
  9. Concrete Detail: Facts, support, examples, illustrations, quotations, plot references, or paraphrases.
  10. Commentary: Your opinion or comment about something. Interpretation, analysis, insight, feelings, or reflection.
  11. Topic Sentence: The first sentence of each body paragraph. Should reflect the main idea of the paragraph.
