A Taste of Drama

In this illustration from William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet," Juliet stands on a balcony while Romeo calls to her from below. He bears a single flower for her. Juliet is a light-skinned woman with long light hair, wearing a puffy-sleeved orange bodice and a full red skirt with orange trim. Romeo is a light-skinned man wearing a purple and pink tunic, turquoise blue cape and leggings, purple knee socks, and bright pink shoes. He also wears a very snug bright pink cap. Now that you are familiar with various drama terms, you will have the chance to read one of the most famous plays written by William Shakespeare: Romeo and Juliet.

You will only read Act 1, a small portion of this play. Romeo and Juliet is considered a tragedy. A tragedy is a type of serious drama that usually ends in disaster for the main character. As you read, make sure to note the theme of friendship in Act 1. How do these friendships compare to the friendships in Bridge to Terabithia?
