Lesson Topic 2: Analyzing Articles

What is an Article?

A newspaper page full of articles, or short and descriptive pieces of information regarding a general subject area.Articles appear in a multitude of different texts. You might see an article in a magazine or newspaper that you have in your house. Articles also appear in textbooks at school. An article is simply a short and descriptive piece of information regarding a general subject area. Many times, articles will not be extremely long because they are about a general subject area and need to keep the attention of the reader by providing specific information.

For example, newspapers are divided into sections. Articles appear within each section that focuses on a particular topic. Newspapers often have Sports sections that will provide information about various sports teams through articles. Also, newspapers might have a section for the world that highlights the happenings in other countries. Articles can be written on several different types of subject areas, and some people write articles as a profession.

However, remember that articles appear in many places such as magazines, textbooks, and journals among others.

 

Types of articles
There are four common types of articles.

Scholarly (academic): Articles that share the knowledge of research and might reveal the results of some type of study or experiment.

Professional/Trade: Articles written by a professional, for other people in that profession. The language might not be quite so simple because other people familiar with the language are the people reading this type of article.

Popular/Special Interest: Articles often found in magazines for entertainment that might connect with someone based on their hobbies or interests.

Newspaper: Short and simple articles that are straight to the point.
