(BTU) Belonging: Thematic Unit Introduction

Belonging: Thematic Unit

Introduction

A word art illustration in the shape of a bird in flight, made from words related to literature.Do you feel like you fit in or belong somewhere? Many people have the desire to find a group of people who connect with them. A group of people whom we have fun with and who make us feel special whether those people are our friends or our family. Some people do not have a group of friends to hang out with and do not have a family who loves them the right way.

In Bridge to Terabithia by Katherine Paterson, Jess Aarons does not feel like he belongs anywhere. People at school do not accept him, and his parents work so hard to make money and support the family that they do not have time for Jess. When he meets the new girl in school, Leslie, Jess ends up learning how to create a world where he belongs and feels accepted.

In this unit, we will examine the theme of belonging. The following two modules, "Short Stories" and "Nonfiction" will have the theme of "Belonging" incorporated into the units. Be prepared to discuss this theme and complete assignments that share the theme of "Belonging."

By the end of this unit, you should have read Chapters 4-6 in Bridge to Terabithia, and you will complete the reading comprehension questions for Chapters 4-6. The questions will be due at the end of this entire module.
